We have a lunch ride planned for this coming Sunday. That would be Sunday, August 29. We will be leaving the QT on Ga 34 just east of Newnan. That will be across the street from the Delta credit union, next door to the DQ, in front of J&R clothing store that used to be there and next to the Dodge dealer that is no longer there. There, I am sure that I have really pinpointed the exact location for our departure at 9:30 am. I am told that the route we will be taking will be a very scenic back roads excursion into Alabama to the Lodge at Cheaha State Park. The restaurant overlooks a beautiful valley and also the highest point in Alabama.
Get the old bike out, dust off the summer cobwebs, do your TCLOCK check that you always do before every ride and meet us at the QT and fill-er-up for the 9:30 departure.
I am planning on a great ride and am putting in my request to be tailgunner so I can watch all the BEAUTIFUL bikes in front of me as they swoop and dance around all the curves along the route.

Labor Day Weekend Ride PDF Print E-mail

  Labor Day ride

We had a great idea for a group ride over the Labor Day weekend.  This is kind of last minute, but the mountains are worth the trip!

We will meet at the Farmer's Market for breakfast at 7 am, kickstands up at 7:30.  We will ride north on I-75 to Exit 312 SR 136 and that should be the end of the Big Road.  We'll meander north into Chattanooga, from there we will find SR 108 that will find its way into SR 111 and then on into Cookville, Tn.  Looks like about 225 miles from one point to another.

We have reservations set up for the http://www.alpinelodge.org/  right there in Cookville. this is at Exit 290 on I-40 so we will be staying pretty close to the interstate.  If you can find a map, take a look at SR 135, 136 or Hwy 290 just north of the hotel.

We can check into the hotel around 3 on Saturday afternoon.  If its hot, we'll find the pool, get a cold beverage or catch some Z's.  After supper, we'll take a little ride going north and see what the roads look like.

Sunday we can start the day with a map and a highlighter along with some help from the locals and plan a day.

The hotel is 52.20 plus tax for the AARP plan and breakfast is a freebie.  Its a holiday weekend, so don't delay in calling and getting a reservation.  I think we are going to have a great time.

Bugs PDF Print E-mail

Bugs!!

It was still 90 degrees at 7:30 when we left the Broadway in Fayetteville.  Keith and Sharon, Linda, Frank and Laura as well as Mark and Lisa strategically taped targets on their bikes wiped off the sweat on their foreheads and put on their helmets.  All had great visions that lots of big bugs soon would be...right there!  We headed south on 92 to Griffin, picked up 16 and headed east.  The temperature started to drop a little as the sun settled below the tree line.  Going through Jackson we passed a line of people waiting for their turn at the local DQ and laughed; we weren't the only ones with an blizzard agenda.  A little while later we saw Breuster's with a sign advertising the new Watermelon flavor; not as many people waiting for that one.  A left hand turn on the outskirts of town put us in Big Bug territory.  We meandered from one pasture after another, the only enticement for the bugs was our headlights.  Our bikes provided the brightest beacon of desire for the biggest bugs ever.  Linda screamed about a deer on the side of the road, and Frank was the first to put in a request for a butt break.  Our leader let him know that there was a light up above and a small town was in his sights.  Around the corner we arrived at the DQ in Monticello just two street lights away.  A look at the odometer showed that we had riden about an hour or so but only 53 miles.  It sure seemed longer than that.

We all made our way into the line at DQ.  I must say this has got to be either the only restaurant in town or the best.  There was a line the whole time we ate our ice cream cones and laughed about who saw the biggest bugs.  After we had our sweet tooth satisfied,  it was time to find the street light; take a look at the targets and see who was winning the bug competition. At first glance it was evident that Frank and Laura had put their targets directly in the eye catching location of the best bug.  They had one right in the bulls eye!  Let's see if it holds up on the ride home.

Someone asked the stupid question to see if their was a different way to go home.  Mark has no trouble getting lost, so he took us up 212 and headed north.  About a mile out of town, Frank squawked over the CB about a clarification of the lightening just north of us.  Lisa replied back that the light was just a reflection of heat and not to worry, the rain had already occurred early in the day.  The weatherman had assured her that a very small chance of rain was forcasted for the evening hours. About a quarter mile later, there was a lot more lightening, oops, I think this looks like rain.

We scooted along north on 212, the bugs were just everywhere.  Some the size of birds, some so small they looked like rain on the windshield; they seemed to dance in the headlights.  Maybe the lightening had something to do with their flight or maybe it could have been the lights on the bikes or maybe the well colored targets that were ever so enticing.  Someone yelled out that their helmet visor had been hit, and complained that maybe they had put their target in the wrong spot.  No one dared laugh for fear of the next bug splat!

The lightning was getting ugly and oh so close.  We made a left on Hwy 20 into McDonough with the hope we would make it to the interstate before the storm caught us.  the lights of the city didn't help the bug count but we did see a real life gas price war as we traveled west through town.  At last we were at I-75, the QT, and clean bathrooms and...no rain.  The QT has nice bright lights, so some topped off gas tanks, some empty others and finally we peeled off the blue tape from strategically placed targets, got out some un-calibrated measuring devices and made a decision.  Frank and Laura's bug was still there in the bulls eye and they were sure they had a winner but in the final tally; it was Linda.  Her target looked as though she had done her homework and knew  exactly where to find the bugs. The big X in the middle of the paper showed that several bugs had met their doom directly in the center of the bulls eye.

I think next year I'm gonna find a bull frog target instead of a paper target.  maybe that will give me a slight edge over the yellow bike!! We had a great time, Mark and Lisa headed north for home and everyone else drove into the lightening going west.  This was a lot of fun with the lights on.

As far as I know, Linda was the only one that got soaked (or even wet) on the way home.

July meeting

We had a great time at the chapter meeting last night.  Our social butterflies had their hands full with guests, getting everyone signed in and meeting everyone.

Tom and Karen, Richard and Betty, and Tommy and Sandy  from Chapter W, Woodstock dropped by for a visit and to pay the ransom note on their beloved mascot. Once the ransom was cleared and Tommy from Chapter W had his beloved Woody;  Karin Duncan was presented with a peanut pin for her dastardly deed and to show it was recognized and rewarded.  Listening to Karin tell how she created the ransom note, I saw a little gleam in her eye;  we may have created a monster!

Johnny brought in some tomatoes from his garden, Ralph took home a seedless watermelon, Julie took home some of the winnings of the 25/25/50 and Betty from Woodstock had gas money for the way home as well.

The weather looked a little rough at the beginning of the meeting, we heard a little thunder during Denise’s safety briefing but everything stayed dry at the IHOP.  Nick rode in on a shiny black Goldwing trike,  Keith and Sharon showed up from their vacation and Jim and Terri are getting ready to take theirs.

We are trying to set plans for Friday night the 16th to be at the Atlanta Motor Speedway drag races.  Last year this was a lot of fun so we want to do it again this year before the season is over.  Gates open at 6pm, practice till 8, Ride and Shine till 9 and the drag races start at 9 and finish when they are done.  Check out the website http://www.atlantamotorspeedway.com/events/drags/

We have a couple of fun things going on in the month of July.  The Heritage Bank in Fayetteville will be the location for a FREE training program given by Alan Head and Dave Aiken for the Officer Certification Program on July 31 and Aug 1.  Alan has assured us all that those that have taken the class have given it good remarks for use with the GWRRA activities as well as leadership skills in real life and on the job.  There are 30 seats taken so far, if you want to attend this program you do not need to be in a leadership position just a GWRRA member.  However, if you plan on taking a leadership position within the chapter in the foreseeable future, you will need this class to take the position.

There is the 4th annual bowling challenge at Junction Lanes in Newnan Ga on Aug 22, 2010.  Wear your chapter shirt, be prepared for some of the craziest bowling styles you have ever seen and visit with everyone in the district.  Cost is 10.00 for two games with or without shoes.  A good bowler has about as much chance of winning in this event as someone who picks up the ball for the first time.

We sure do miss Carolyn but I’m glad she is recovering and following doctors orders to take it easy.  She says one of the most painful things to do is laugh, so I guess being at the meeting would not be a good place to convalesce. Carole and Bill didn’t make it so we didn’t get our BS update either.  However, we did learn something about the Iowa 2 step from Sharon during her days as a deputy at Wing Ding.  Things are always funnier when they are real life.

A special thanks to all that contribute to our meeting.  There is no way in today’s busy lifestyle that one person can run everything anymore and especially ...me.   It takes a good group with people pitching in to make the chapter and the meeting a success.  I can’t say enough about the extra effort Alan Head has given the chapter in the past two years with updates from the district staff, insight into training and stepping in on a moment’s notice to help with just about anything.

Johnny Ossee and Sharon Burkingstock  for their  ability to make guests feel welcome.

Karin Duncan for her help with the pirate activities

Jim Totten for tallying up the miles

Terri Totten for keeping the check book out of the red

Denise Head for helping with the Chapter Educator position

Linda Ruddy for helping with the Chapter Director duties

Keith Burkingstock for his help with the website and getting information out to everyone

Carole Laakkonen for her humor and keeping everyone aware of the BS in the chapter

Julie Wynn for keeping us current of the happy news

Carolyn Cary for her wisdom and humor of the life and time of Fayetteville

And lastly, to Betty Buchanan for keeping us all on time

Thank you all for making the chapter a success,

Let’s ride

Mark
